CMYK: Base colours

Interestingly, these dots represent the CMYK model of printing.

C- Cyan

M- Magenta

Y- Yellow

K- key

They form the base colours for printing the multicoloured images. Plates of all these colours are laid out separately on a page and lined up in the same spot while printing. This is important for printing multicoloured image accurately. So the colours of these dots are overlapping or not in the same line when the images are blurry or not sharp.

Printers call these dots as “registration mark” which looks like this:

These marks help in identifying the density of colours and dot formation while printing. Unregistered ones have uncomfortable blurry effects.

As we all are aware that newspapers are printed in bulk, so it is impossible to keep a track on the printing quality and alignment. It is not possible for the printer to check each page of the newspaper. If the printer is having knowledge of CMYK placings and appearances, he can easily spot the glitches by simply looking at these dots. Therefore, these dots are time saviours for printers as they simply make sure good printing. 

These 4 multicoloured dots are present even in books but they are cut down while binding. This is the reason we never get to see these 4 multicoloured dots in our books.
