MOVIE REVIEW- “GAME OVER”

If at all life were to give us extra chances for all the mistakes that we make, I am sure we wouldn’t be here doing what we are doing now.

Directed by Ashwin Sarvanan, that is exactly what this film comes up with, extra chances to make things right or does it really? Well, we never know, a classic way to have the audience choose whatever fits his\her theory.
The film starts off with a woman being killed in a barbaric way but what is more worth noting is the whole scene seems like it is shot in a terrible camera, making the scene feel real and gore. “Sapna” is played by Taapsee. The screen name chosen for Taapsee that is “Sapna” which literally translates to “Dream” makes me wonder if all that happens during the course of the film is just a dream. Again a point unanswered but left to the audience to decide upon.
Sapna is a video game developer who seems to be addicted to Pacman out of all the games she could play. But I can understand why they chose Pacman over PUBG. I mean how could she kill 99 others in one attempt with just a couple of lives. Puns aside, The first half of the film leaves us contemplating what the actual genre of the film is and I mean this in a good way because one of the main qualities of a movie is the genre blending which leaves even more room for imagination. You know it is a good movie if it has a scope for discussion and “Game over” does that really well.
Sapna is a rape victim survivor and memories of her disturbing past keeps flashing in her mind. And because of that incident, she has grown a fear for darkness and often has panic attacks when she enters unlit rooms. And they have portrayed her addiction to Pacman into Sapna’s life in an applauding manner. The character and the story are so intertwined that ironically it is her fear that saves her life in the end. (Spoiler I guess!)
The horror elements used in the film do not seem to try too hard to scare the audience, in fact with a use of such elements they definitely had us tricked for us guessing it to be a horror movie when it’s not. The writing of the movie is excellent showing it in a non-linear way with glimpses of her past being shown suddenly in-between an ongoing scene. Also, the makers have some interesting things to say about violence towards women and the residue it can leave. “Game over” keeps a check of the audience’s attention and makes sure that we have our eyes glued to the screen. With catchy dialogues and everything, the movie was overall great. This movie stands as a great example to the Indian cinema telling why experimenting is important. After all as audiences how long can we keep watching the same stuff decorated in a different way.

Game over feels like a breath of fresh air and is definitely worth a watch.

Taapsee has also become a good actor by proving herself to be versatile by fitting into various roles, providing good character representation from her past movies like “Badla”, “Mulk” and “Maanmarziyan” etc.
This movie gives a positive hope that there is a LOT that is left to be seen and the future of the Indian cinema is bright as there are still a lot of concepts that are yet to be uncovered. So that it can keep its audience satisfied and engaged for the upcoming years.

Game over turns out to be a revelation for the Indian movie makers and demands every director to bring change in the industry that is long overdue.
