Bollywood Movies with goosebump-ing goodbyes!
When we say ‘Bollywood, it’s the rainbow-coloured gamut of movies we think about. Hindi Cinema has films for every genre; action, thriller, rom-com, comedy, sci-fi, and much more. You name the genre and the plate is full. How much ever we blame Bollywood for being overdramatic, we have to agree for its magic. You will cringe at the unrealistic stunts but will cry for the hero and heroine’s love story in the next five minutes.
A movie starts and it gradually unfolds the events. The manner in which things are settled and eventually how it ends; everything counts. But somehow the ending of a movie, bollywood or Hollywood has an edge. It decides how to say a goodbye to the audience. While for the audience, it’s something that they take with them. Endings are nothing but a closure of a story or a break between a series of films. The makers can either decide to leave you at a cliffhanger or hug your heart tight with a happily ever after. A huge chunk of hindi movies tend do the later; it’s maybe because the viewers always look for an escape.
Whether sappy or spine chiller, bollywood movies never disappoint you, barring some. While the hindi cinema is popularly known for its colourful songs, family-dance musicals and item numbers, there are films which are also remembered for the way they leave you.
Here are 6 bollywood movies with a memorable ending,
#1 Mother India:
Let’s start from 1957. Mehboob Khan is one of the versatile directors of all time. He made a masterpiece named ‘Mother India’ with the outstanding Nargis playing the role of Radha. It is literally the Mother of all Bollywood movies.
Shamu’s mother had taken a loan from Sukhilala who tricks her to give the entire farm produce in the lieu of money. Unable to bear the unpleasantness of the situation, Shamu (Raaj Kumar) walks away from his family. But his wife, Radha sticks to her responsibilities and raises their two boys Ramu and Birju. After a lapse, they are young men who eventually learn about the reason behind their poverty. Birju, being aggressive aims for the evil Sukhilala and spontaneously kills him. He then aims for his daughter on her wedding day. Before he could attempt a second murder, Radha, the moral woman shoots a bullet down his chest.
Radha went through utmost humiliation to feed her children for years. And yet, became the agent of death for her very own son. She refuses a child with hatred and crass, for the honor of the village and its people. She chose values over motherly love.
The end was a proof that our women are strong!
#2 Lagan: Once upon a time
Based in the British era, Lagaan is one heart touching film for every Indian. In order to forgive their agricultural tax, a young British officer challenges a group of villagers to win a cricket match against them. The fact that these North Indians do not know anything about the game makes it gripping. While we all anticipated the ending, it was still quite nerve wrecking to stick your eyes at the last ball. Yes, the founders of cricket lost the match themselves.
We all had proud little goosebumps watching Bhuvan (Aamir khan) and his team put in their blood and sweat, literally and finally taste victory.
#3 Devdas
Sanjay Leela Bhansali is the Christopher Nolan of Bollywood. His ‘Devdas’ was one such bollywood character that sets the bar high, played by the King Khan SRK. Devdas is a compassionate lover, who returns to his village after 10 years. But the handsome young man is prohibited to marry his childhood best friend, Paro a.k.a. Aishwarya Rai. According to his father, Paro belongs to a dancer family and they being Zamindars do not consider even having an association with them. Devdas turns to alcohol and falls into self destruction. But who can stop a lover!
The goodbye of the movie witnessed Paro running in her white saree sliping down the huge stairs of her in laws’ palace with her hair flying (Bollywood OP). Devdas lying pale right outside the gate can see a blurry beautiful woman running towards him. But alas! The gates to the palace and love were closed. The end of Devdas’ life and the film found us and Paro sobbing.

#4 Saat khoon maaf
The hindi adaption of Ruskin Bonds’ Sussana’s seven husbands is one of Vishal Bhardwaj’s fine work. With Priyanka Chopra in the lead, Saat Khoon Maaf is a story of young girl looking for her perfect man. Sussana, throughout her life is in an unending quest for love. Her urge persuades her to be the lady Macbeth of the story causing six deaths. She murders her six husbands who were overpowered by a flaw each, i.e. pride, gluttony, wrath, envy, lust and greed.
There are multiple quora threads to interpret the ending; as she asks forgiveness for seven sins from the father (played by Ruskin Bond himself). Some admit that her seventh victim was her most loyal staff, Aunt Maggie. However, the majority agrees that because she accepted Jesus as her seventh husband, she killed herself, Sussana Anna Marie Johannes and became a nun.
We definitely deserved one more interval before the ending.
#5 Ram leela
It’s a pure Sanjay Bhansali treat again. Ram Leela, starring the now couple Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone is not a conventional love story. Owing to class and caste issues, the seductively hot leela is not allowed to marry her boyfriend Ram. Their families technically are enemies and try to separate the love birds. But their love is deep, they decide if they don’t end up together, they die together. After all the iconic songs and stellar performances, Bhansali closes the movie with Ram and Leela shooting each other right after a painfully yet sensuous kissing scene.
We never saw it coming.
#6 Andhadhun
With tons of quora threads and youtube videos, the ending of Andhadhun still remains a mystery. Directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar, the 2018 movie was a fresh break for bollywood. It’s a black comedy thriller that walks into the life of a blind piano player Akash, played by the very talented Ayushmann Khurrana. The evergreen Tabu plays Simi who is sharp and evil and is the reason for turmoil in Akash’s life. In the second half of the movie, Akash wants to take revenge from Simi and subsequently transplant her cornea into his eye. But the scene where he kicks off a can with a rabbit on his stick draws a confusing line; as it suggests that Akash never lost his eyesight. This could also be a metaphor for the rabbit killed at the end. Netflix India too released two possible theories to interpret the ending.
The makers claim it’s what you want it to be.
We love when bollywood takes a different road, from Mehboob khan being the master himself to Sanjay Bhansali being obsessed with separating lovers. Happily ever afters are cute but endings like these make us binge the Bollywood even more!
