Every year our beloved Indian Cinema produces nearly two thousand films. Many of these movies have a great storyline, great characters, great acting and background score. Although, what makes us glued to these movies is the journey that the protagonists go through. We are on a roller-coaster ride with all of these amazing characters. But as we live in India, a country that has a patriarchal society most of the lead protagonists in these movies are male.
And although most of the male characters in Hindi Cinema are all macho, hunk, Swagsters. Some of them do have their own ingenious persona. These Characters leave a deep impact on us due to their eccentric personality and their quirky traits. Be it Rancho from 3 idiots or Babu Bhaiya from Hera Pheri we inevitably fall in love with them. So here is a list of Seven Best Written Male Characters of Hindi Cinema:
Faizal Khan from Gangs of Wasseypur
This Character is amazingly portrayed by Nawazudin Siddiqui, and the journey of this character is just incredible. We get to see him in both parts of Gangs of Wasseypur. Also, the minute details that we get to see from his childhood make this character even more interesting. From cleaning train Washrooms to taking drug addiction and getting involved in the underground Mafia; Faizal Khan covers a remarkable journey.
We get to see every aspect of his life, be it his love life or his professional life. The emotions that this character portrays are anger, love, and vengeance. His storyline, combined with his remarkable Swag makes him a great character.
The conflicts that his character faces are indeed a lot to take in; such as facing poverty during childhood and growing up in a violent neighbourhood. But his reaction to those conflicts is what Faizal Khan so unusual and unique. The way his character evolves under these circumstances and reaches its catharsis is just a treat for all cinema lovers!
Rancho from 3 Idiots
This character single-handedly changed our point of view regarding Success. Brilliantly portrayed by Aamir Khan; Rancho’s sharp wit, combined with the joyful portrayal of emotions is what makes him stand out. The curiosity his character has of questioning everything and challenging the social norms makes us laugh hysterically. But it also makes us think about the social rules as well as the logic behind those rules.
He makes us question the education system, as well as the clichéd mindset of “Log Kya Kahenge?” His famous quote: “Success Ke Peeche mat Bhaago; Kabil Bano, Kabil… Kamyabi to Saali Jhak Maarke Peeche Aaegi” tells a lot about his character. He also shows us how understanding a topic is more important than just cramming it like a parrot.
From being a lovable goof to an esteemed scientist, the character of Rancho is one that still rules our heart. The journey he takes from the campus of ICE to the school in Leh is an inspiring one. Also, knowing that Rancho was treated as a servant during his childhood but his love for education made him a brilliant scientist; shows us the real value of education. Not to forget the value of chasing excellence rather than success.
Inder from Sanam Teri Kasam
Inder has got to be one of my favourite romantic characters of all time. From being an unemployed philanderer to a successful lawyer, the journey this character covers is extraordinary. The emotions and the value of love that this character symbolises is what makes him so brilliantly unique. Harshvardhan Rahne has done a spectacular job by making this character come to life.
This character is a modern-day Romeo who does everything to make the love of his life Saru ( Mawra Hawcane) happy. Everything that he does for Saru, no matter how big or small makes us say Awww. And the writers have written him so well that they make you fall in love with Inder. Also, this movie is a tear-jerker, and one of the reasons for it being so is Inder!
Liquid from Pyar ka Punchnama
The debut role of Divyenndu Sharma as Nishant Agarwal aka Liquid in this movie was just phenomenal. This character is one of those Characters that most of the Indian guys could relate too. Because the things that Liquid does for Charu are the things that most Indian guys have done for a girl they liked.
Nishant is an employee at a corporate company where he is frustrated by his boss. Also, the emotions he portrays during that time are relatable but a little exaggerated. What makes Liquid’s character so interesting is seeing his temper getting high due to something. Also, the nonsense he utters while he is angry makes us laugh a lot!
Later in the movie, he meets Charu and falls head over heels in love with her. However, Charu is already in a long-distance relationship. But She uses Liquid for her benefits, and Liquid does everything just to make her happy. He knows that she doesn’t give a damn about him, but he still follows all her requests. Doing all this is what makes Liquid’s character so fun to watch. Also at the end, when he slaps her boyfriend not only liquid, all of us get our vengeance too!
Babu Bhaiya from Hera Pheri
One of the funniest characters in Bollywood ever, brilliantly performed by Paresh Rawal. Baburao Ganpatrao Apte is one of the protagonists in the movie series Hera Pheri and Phir Hera Pheri. He is a middle-class person who runs a Garage. He rents one of the rooms in his house to Shyam ( Sunil Shetty), a new tenant. At the same time, Raju (Akshay Kumar) is already one of his tenants.
The interactions and shenanigans between all three of them are what make this movie a laughter riot. The character of Babu Bhaiya is written so well; that you can easily imagine his reaction in any situation. His responses and immaturity even after being older then Shyam and Raju, are what make Babu Bhaiya such a comical character. He is so famous that you can easily find him being used as a meme template by various memers!
Choocha from Fukrey
This one might come off as a surprise, but if you notice this Character with a keen eye; you will observe that the character is very well written. His charming personality and his weird love for Bholi Punjaban makes him a lovable goof in Fukrey and Fukrey Returns. Choocha is a middle class millennial with an extraordinary ability to see dreams that can win them lotteries. But this ability of Choocha ain’t the only thing that makes him unique.
The things that happen to him throughout the movies such as being threatened by Bholi Punjaban, being made to do illegal stuff etc. are hilarious. But how he still maintains his jolly personality while facing these threats is what makes this character so memorable. Varun Sharma did a fantastic job portraying this character. His role is one that makes us all feel childish and stupid again while making us all laugh hysterically.
Barfi from Barfi
Barfi or Murphy is a mute and deaf character in the movie Barfi played by Ranbir Kapoor. He is the protagonist of the film. And he makes us feel all the emotions be it hysterically laughing at his mischief or crying with him when he visits Shruti’s (Ileana D’cruz) home. Even after being a mute character, Barfi leaves us all Speechless with his Character in the movie.
What makes Barfi so unique is the fact that he doesn’t think of himself as a loser. And even after facing hard difficulties in life, he still finds a way to be happy. Barfi is one of those characters that take you on an emotional ride throughout the movie. And even after not uttering a word, you can easily understand everything he is trying to convey.
