This is one of the movies that have female leads and all of them have done a superb job at acting. Directed by Leena Yadav this movie stars Radhika Apte, Surveen Chawla, and Tannishtha Chatterjee in lead roles. This film talks about rural India and highlights issues such as Child Marriage, Domestic Violence, and Patriarchy. Having an IMDB rating of 7.5 this is an amazing take on a life of 4 rural women.

Shahid (2012)

This incredible piece of art by Hansal Mehta is based on the life of lawyer and human rights activist Shahid Azmi. Rajkumar’s acting in this one is truly unbelievable and perhaps one of his best performances to date. The movie follows the life of a former militant operative who laters becomes a Criminal Lawyer and fights for those who have been falsely convicted of terrorism. Having an IMDB rating of 8.2 this movie is a must-watch for Rajkumar’s fans.

The directorial debut of Ashwiny Iyer Tiwary leaves a huge impact on all of us. One of the best performances by Swara Bhaskar and the story revolving around the importance of education. Especially for the poor and downtrodden, this film features an epic mother-daughter duo. Having an IMDB rating of 8.4 this Drama/comedy will surely keep you entertained.

Kambyaab (2019)

This movie by Hardik Mehta showcases the outstanding performance of Sanjay Mishra. The story revolves around a washed-up side actor of Hindi movies, who wants to make a comeback so he can complete acting in 500 films. This film is a great tribute to the character artists who have faded into oblivion or ended in tragedy. Having an IMDB rating of 7.9 is an epitome of the life of a Side-Actor.

Tumbbad (2018)

Directed by Rahi Anil Barve and Anand Gandhi this horror/drama is an epic movie. And it features one of the best cinematography I have ever seen in a Bollywood movie. This film follows Vinayak (Sohum Shah) who sets to explore the hidden treasure from a temple in Maharashtra. Having an IMDB rating of 8.3 the great visuals of this film are worth watching.

Ship of Theseus (2012)

A great movie by Anand Gandhi, which makes the viewer think about life through Anand’s perspective. The film follows three different stories of a blind photographer (Egyptian actress Aida Elkashef) a monk (Neeraj Kabi) and a stockbroker (Sohum Shah). All three of them face dilemmas in their life which makes the viewer think a lot. This profound masterpiece has an IMDB rating of 8 and is one of the most overlooked bollywood movies of all time.

Ugly (2013)

This Mystery/Thriller by Anurag Kashyap has a gripping story. The movie follows the aftermath of when a girl goes missing and her real and stepfather starts accusing each other of kidnapping her. The twists and plots and the revelations are so ugly that it makes the movie own up to its name. Having an IMDb rating of 8 this is amongst the best work of Kashyap.

Mukkabaaz (2017)

This remarkable piece of art by Anurag Kashyap addresses the politics in Sports as well as Caste. The story follows Vineet (Shravan Kumar Singh), an inspiring boxer who finds an opponent in Bhagwan Das. The head of the boxing federation, things tend to get pretty messy after Vineet falls in love with Bhagwan’s niece Suniana. Having an IMDB rating of 8 this is an awe-inspiring take on Boxing by Anurag Kashyap.

Aligarh (2015)

This movie directed by Hansal Mehta features two great actors Rajkumar Rao and Manoj Bajpai. Based on the true story of the suspension of Prof Siras from the Aligarh Muslim University because he was gay. A large part of this movie came from the former Indian Express journalist, Sebastian’s conversations with the Professor. Having an IMDB rating of 7.8 this is a phenomenal take on the LGBTQ struggles.

Gour hari Dastaan: The Freedom File (2015)

This movie by Anant Mahadevan is based on the unique life of Gour Hari Das. A person who had to fight a silent battle that lasted for 32 years, against the government just to prove that he was a freedom fighter. The amazing performance by Vinay Pathak is mesmerizing. This movie has an IMDB rating of 7.5 and is amongst overlooked movies made by Bollywood.
