Women are not only successful in managing households. But are also capable of making their name professionally. Indian women’s history is full of respectful pioneers who have done exceptionally well in their fields. They have not only broken gender barriers but also made exceptional progress. One could witness Indian women year after year making their name and marking history around the world. Here’s to honour the strong women of India. 1. Indira Gandhi:
The first women Prime Minister of India is Indira Gandhi. She served the country from 1966 to 1977. Indira Gandhi was also titled as the “Woman of the Millennium” in a poll that was organised by BBC in 1999. She was also the first woman to have receive the Bharat Ratna award.
2. Pratibha Patil:
Prathiba Patil is an Indian politician who became the first woman President of India. She served the nation as the 12th President from July 2007 to July 2012. Prathiba Patil is the only woman to hold the office as a member of the Indian National Congress.
3. Kalpana Chawla:
The first Indian woman who went into space is Kalpana Chawla. In 1977 she went into space as a primary robotic arm operator and a mission specialist. Therefore, she is a role model for those who dream of achieving the same.
4. Sarojini Naidu:
Sarojini Naidu is India’s First Women Governor. She is also the first woman president of the Indian National Congress.
5. Kiran Bedi:
In 1972, Kiran Bedi became the first woman Indian Police Service officer in India. Moreover, she also became the first woman who was appointed as the United Nations Civil Police adviser in 2003.
6. Mother Teresa:
Mother Teresa became the first Indian woman to win a Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. She also founded the Missionaries of Charity and has devoted her life to social work.
7. Justice M. Fathima Beevi:
Justice M. Fathima Beevi was the first female Supreme Court judge of India. She was appointed as the same in 1989.
8. Sania Mirza:
The first Indian woman tennis player to win the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) title in 2005 was Sania Mirza. Later in 2015, she also became the first Indian woman to get no.1 position in the WTA doubles rankings.
9. Sucheta Kripalani:
Sucheta Kripalani is the first woman Chief Minister of India. She was a politician and an Indian freedom fighter who served as the head of the Uttar Pradesh government from 1963 to 1967. She was one of those women who were also elected to the Constituent Assembly.

10. Bachendri Pal:
In 1984, Bachendri Pal became the first Indian woman who reached the summit of Mount Everest. Later, she led expeditions with a team of women in Indo-Nepalese Women’s Mount Everest Expedition, The Great Indian Women’s Rafting Voyage and First Indian Women Trans-Himalayan Expedition.
11. Mary Kom:
Mary Kom is the only woman boxer who has won medals in all the six World Championships. She was the only Indian woman boxer who qualified for the 2012 Olympics. In 2014, she also became the first Indian woman boxer to win a gold medal in Asian Games.
12. Saina Nehwal:
Saina Nehwal is the first Indian woman to win a medal in badminton at the Olympic Games in 2012. In 2015, she also became the first Indian woman to secure the no. 1 position in the world ranking.
13. Mithali Raj:
Mithali Raj was the first woman cricketer to have secure the position of scoring a double century in Test cricket.
14. Smriti Mandhana:
Smriti Mandhana was the first Indian woman cricketer to have score a double century in a one-day game.
15. Hima Das:
Hima Das became the first Indian athlete to win gold at the IAAF World Under 20 Athletics Championships. She also won gold and silver medals at the Asian Games that were held in Jakarta in 2019.
16. Steffi D’Souza:
She represented India as the captain of the women’s hockey team at the first international women’s hockey tournament that took place in London in 1953. Steffi D’Souza was also the first Indian woman to get arjuna award by the Government of India.
17. Priya Jhingan:
Priya Jhingan is the first Indian army woman. She joined the Indian Army in 1993.
18. Anna Malhotra:
Anna Rajam Malhotra is the first woman IAS officer of India.
19. Anandibai Gopalrao Joshi:
Anandibai Gopalrao Joshi is the first Indian female physician. She became one in the year 1887. She also became the first Indian woman who was trained in Western medicine.
20. Roshini Sharma:
Roshini Sharma is the first Indian woman to ride a motorbike to Kashmir from Kanyakumari.
21. Shila Dawre:
Shila Dawre became India’s first woman auto rickshaw driver in 1988. She also wants to start her own academy for women interested in auto driving.
22. Reita Faria Powel:
She is an Indian model and beauty queen who won the title of ‘Miss World’ in 1966. She was also the first Asian woman to win the title.
23. Arati Saha:
She is the first Indian and Asian woman to have swam across the English Channel in the year 1959. She is also the first female sportsperson to be awarded Padma Shri by the government.
24. Harita Kaur Deol:
She is the first woman pilot who have the experience of flying solo in the Indian Air Force.
25. Durga Banerjee:
Durga Banerjee is the first Indian woman who became a female pilot and captain of Indian Airlines in 1966. She also became the first woman ever to fly the ‘Tornado A-200’ aircraft.
