What is Pre-menstrual syndrome?

PMS, also known as the pre-menstrual syndrome is a condition of women facing huge emotional, physical, psychological issues during their menstrual/monthly cycle.

What are the symptoms?
During the monthly cycle every woman face symptoms such as:

  • Mood Swings
  • Bloating
  • Fatigue
  • Food cravings
  • Depressed
  • Anxiety
  • Feeling tired
  • Headache
  • Difficulty in sleeping
  • Cramps
  • Pain

Almost all women face a drastic change during their cycle. It depends on person to person. Few might have all the symptoms mentioned while a few may get 2-3 symptoms.

What causes premenstrual syndrome?

To this date, there has been no particular reason as to what’s the cause of it. However, it’s the hormonal changes that trigger all of this. That does not mean there is a problem. Women go through a lot of changes from the start as they grow up.

What can a woman do to manage pre-menstrual syndrome? 

To reduce the number of symptoms, women should regularly focus on doing exercise, aerobics, yoga, or just walk to help them be balanced while they do their routine. It’s also been recommended to reduce the amount of sugar intake, salt, junk food, caffeine to lessen the pre-menstrual symptoms. By doing all this your more focused. Yes, all of this is easier while said and difficult when implemented. But why not give it a try? And be positive and make ourselves feel better!

Does pre-menstrual syndrome change with age?

The answer to this question is ‘yes’. As you reach your 30’s and 40’s the level of PMS worsens because you are coming to a stage of menopause so the level of hormones goes up and down. The PMS stops once you get your menopause, that’s when you no longer get your period.

Tracking

Experts have told that tracking you’re PMS is the best way out. There are many apps where you can keep a track of you’re emotional, physical symptoms as it keeps you cautious and also sees the progress.

When to visit your doctor?

Consult a doctor if the symptoms get affected too much on your health as it can take a toll on a day to day basis. When you visit a doctor he/she will ask you about family history to have a clear picture and understand the situation which can be treated accordingly.

The doctor might tell you to undergo some tests to see if there are no complications and if your thyroid gland is working properly.
