Love. It is a universal language. And it exists in multiple forms across the universe. Some may say “Drop me a message when you reach home” or a simple “Eat your meal on time“. But these are some phrases that are more relevant and important than the cliché, I LOVE YOU.

As humans, we cannot summarize everything we feel in just these 3 words. Sometimes, there are words which surpass it by miles. Some phrases have stood the test of time, again & again.

So next time if you fall short of words to express & you don’t want to say ILY, use these. Because there are some words with the untapped potential for creating magic.

1. I got you a PUPPY!

And most importantly, a puppy will always bind people together, forever.  So, if you are planning to go down on your knees but don’t want to say I love you, adopt a puppy. Let those wiggly paws & puppy eyes speak for themselves!

2. I am there for you!

2020 has kicked us all down to our lowest. We all have lost someone. And the void left behind them can never be filled by anyone. But do we really want that?

In testing times like these, all we need is someone to tell us, “I am there for you”. These words can have healed someone. And it is always good to know that someone’s got your back! Now go & let your friends and loved ones know that you are there for them.

3. I love your playlist!

Now, this might be the most millennial thing I have ever said. But, there, I said it!

We have to accept that songs can make us feel like an organ that we thought we never had. (Pfft…heart, ofc!) And there is no joy greater than knowing that someone appreciates your taste in music. Because, “Oh my god, you listen to John Mayer too? I LOVE GRAVITY!!!”.

Ngl, I love your playlist is far more important & relevant than I love you. Period.

4. Main Tera, Main Tera, Main Tera…

“Ik tarfa shayad ho, Dil ka bharam,

Do tarfa hai to ye, sanjog hai”

Mai tera
A phrase more important than I love you, “Main Tera”

Let’s face it. We all are getting high on Kalank’s title track. And what’s more beautiful about it, is the fact that it is happening after more than a year of its release! In other words, if someone said these lines to me, I would die of love. This phrase & the lyrics has got us all trapped!

And since we agree on this, here are a few renditions of this song that I absolutely love!

5. I am proud of you!

As Indians, most of us have grown up in competitive households. We are the harbingers of good grades. In addition to good grades, we are also used to name & shame others. But there is one thing which we all crave for. And they are only 5 words long, “I am proud of you!”.

However, we are rarely ever told this. And although our parents or teachers might not know of this, this phrase is important. More relevant than I love you.

So, if no one has told you today, here it is. I am proud of you!

We fail to appreciate these phrases and the role they play in our life. And that’s probably because we have put I love you on a higher pedestal. Because we have made it a benchmark for everything else.

But now is the time to understand that it isn’t everything. Because there will always be a situation, where we would prefer these phrases over I love you. Like when we come back home tired. And our mothers tell us, aaj rajma chawal bane hai! Or when you are lost & need help and someone says, can I help you? Are you okay? And when Virat Kohli converts singles into doubles & the commentator announces, another century for the magician!

Do you agree with these? Or are there some other phrases that cut for you? Do share them in the comments below. Because at the end of the day, you love, who you love.*Coughing in John Mayer*
