The Sci-Fi Binge List You Will Love!
The genre of Sci-Fi movies has undeniably been one of infinite possibilities. That is the reason why it is the easiest genre to watch, and also the hardest. We may get so lost in the sheer brilliance of the world itself, that we may overlook the fact that the story or the characters may be very weak. But the films which do it right get remembered for a long time thereafter. Listed below are some of the films which did it right, and I bet you’ve heard of most of them, and that’s for a reason!
1. Back To The Future
I can’t miss this one out! Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis directed this series, and Alan Silvestri was the music director. So it’s hardly a surprise that it has won several relevant awards. The public also received it very well back in 1985. It remains a pop culture phenomenon to date and also one of the most enjoyable watches for all age groups. The fact that this movie is about its characters and not exactly about time travel makes it very good. People enjoy good stories, and only a cool sci-fi concept isn’t enough to make a film good. Technology limited the extent of VFX and Sound Design, but it broke the standards for both using some clever innovation. The set design was commendable, and they emulated various time periods flawlessly! The casting also never felt short of perfect. Watch the trailer to get a glimpse!
2. The Matrix
Another cult classic with probably one of the most ambitious Sci-fi concepts, amazing VFX, superb actors (Keanu Reeves. That’s all I’m going to say!), a great storyline with multiple well-represented, layered characters, edge-of-the-seat action, and awesome visual narration! Not to mention the fact that it has been meme-d so much even today! Even with a slightly tougher to grasp storyline, these movies kept us in a constant sense of suspense and puzzle. It has a few metaphors and abstract concepts, but it is still worth every moment of the watch time! You can click here to watch the trailer.
3. Star Wars
This series has been one of the most commercially successful, even if it was released over a span of 40 years! It follows the story of the Skywalkers in a “far, far away galaxy” and is one of the best-written stories of all time, purely based on the fact that it managed to keep audiences engaged for 9 entire films. It became a full-fledged franchise and cult icon, complete with uber-popular villains, figurines, collectibles, and even popular modern games! The construction of a world where humans, humanoids, aliens, and robots co-exist has been done extremely well. This is also one of the most meme-d and culturally celebrated series and stays relevant even today for its portrayal of relationships, wars, and emotions! Here’s the trailer to get you hyped up!
4. Inception
This 4-time Academy Award-winning film has been written, produced, and directed by Christopher Nolan, and that shows! Even today, audiences are in awe over the action sequences, confusing story, wonderful concept, and leaked BTS footage! Inspired by the phenomenon of lucid dreaming, Nolan wrote this film and it became the 4th highest-grossing film of 2010! Fans today still stand by the belief that Inception is Nolan’s best work so far. It explores the possibility of being able to infiltrate someone else’s subconscious while being asleep. Starring Leonardo Di Caprio, it also set a high standard for VFX and cinematography. With Hans Zimmer as composer, the soundtrack ‘Time’ has become a timeless piece of music. You can’t be in the inner Sci-Fi circles if you haven’t seen this movie, and don’t let the trailer itself confuse you.
5. Jurassic Park
This movie was a personal favorite of many kids at the time of release (for good reason). It dabbled with the idea of humans co-existing with long-extinct dinosaurs. Spielberg liked the script by author Michael Crichton because it showed a very realistic method of how dinosaurs could actually exist in the future! There were a lot of hiccups regarding the VFX of the movie, which again, were not competitive enough at the time to meet Steven’s high standards. They actually constructed a life-sized animatronic version of a T-Rex to make things easier while filming! When the movie finally released, it received much fanfare. This HAS to be on your sci-fi binge list! The trailer is awesome too!
6. Honorable Mentions
Dark (Netflix), Real Steel, Pacific Rim, Lost In Space (Netflix) and so many more that we don’t have the space to write down in here. Sci-Fi is an infinite universe, and new boundaries will always be made and broken almost every year. The least we can do is support and propagate these movies!
