Won’t you like such a movie?! After all, that’s all we want! However, thanks to a few creative minds in Bollywood, we get to experience an even better version of romance. Movies which are realistic and filled with emotion along with some mainstream entertaining romances, “classic romance” has evolved with time. here’s a list of classic romantic movies you shouldn’t miss!
1) Devdas
What better classic romantic movies than Devdas! So we decided to start with the best! The film was directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and was released in 2002. The film fits all part of a classic romance as it takes you on an emotional roller coaster!
The music and dance along with the dialogues and the exceptional acting is surely a treat to all our senses! Songs like maar dala, silsila ye chaahat ka, and bairi Piya give an insight into the pain and suffering of the characters and set up the mood of the film. In addition, the famous song Dhola re Dhola is an iconic dance number which gives the film it’s eternal life.
But what steals the show is the storyline! It is set in the early 1900s and follows Shah Rukh Khan as Devdas. He returns from London to marry his childhood sweetheart, Paro, played by Aishwarya Rai. However, the rejection of this marriage by his own family sparks his descent into alcohol. This ultimately leads to his emotional deterioration. Eventually, he seeks refuge with a courtesan played by Madhuri Dixit.

2) Masaan
Not many people know of this Vicky Kaushal movie. But it earns a top spot in our list of classic romantic movies you shouldn’t miss! This 2015 directorial debut of Neeraj Ghayawam is rated 8.2 on IMDb. But if this doesn’t make you want to watch the film, here’s some more about it which will change your mind!
This multi starrer movie has Vicky Kaushal, Shweta Tripathi, Pankaj Tripathi, Richa Chadda, and Sanjay Mishra among others. It is a classic desi example or love, loss, and romance. As it was released recently, you can see the difference in direction and story when compared to Devdas. This modern desi romance includes aspects of societies and insight into the folly of human life. It’s a must-watch romantic movie and it will stay in your heart for a long time!

3) Wake up, Sid!
Wake up, Sid! Is a 2009 film directed by Ayan Mukerji. The film can be called a coming of age but you cannot miss the romance in it! Also, it might be a decade old but feels it was released just yesterday! See it to believe it!
The film is about Siddharth Mehra( Ranbir Kapoor), a spoilt and selfish college student. He learns the meaning of life and the importance of responsibility from Aisha(Konkana Sen Sharma), an aspiring writer from Kolkata. The film also stars Anupam Kher, Rahul Khanna, and Namit Das among others. It’s packed with amazing songs like Wake up Sid!, Iktara, Aaj Kal Zindagi.
Moreover, this film is one of the few which brought a change in Bollywood. The film in itself is an ironic classic! The heroine saves the hero by making him a better man! Also, the heroine is older than the hero! Wake up, Sid! certainly breaks all the conventional barriers and yet has managed to stay a classic romantic film!

4) Dum Laga ke Haisha
Speaking of unconventional classic romantic films, this wasn’t to be missed! Dum Laga ke haisha was a surprise package for the audience- and they loved it! This 2015 film is directed by Sharat Katariya. The film speaks about the couple overcoming societal barriers to find true love.
The plot of the movie is super gripping. And the acting by Sanjay Mishra, Sheeba Chaddha, and Seema Pahlwa just adds to the magic! Prem (Ayushmann Khurrana), a school dropout, hesitantly marries an educated but overweight girl, Sandhya(Bhoomi Pednekar). However, the two come closer when they take part in a race, which involves Prem carrying Sandhya on his back.
Furthermore, this classic romantic movie doesn’t only revolve around the development of love. The film cleverly incorporates the societal expectations from a couple after marriage and the pressure of sex and children. Moreover, it unmistakably conveys the idea of how women should be to find a decent family for marriage. Looks and appearances are given far more important than knowledge and intellect.

5) Lunchbox
This out of the box romantic movie isn’t to be missed! The 2013 released Film is directed by Ritesh Batra and is rated a commendable 7.8 by IMDb.
The haatke plot where an unlikely mistake by a tiffin carrier service results in Ila’s(Nimrat Kaur) tiffin, that was made for her husband, being delivered to Saajan Fernandes (Irrfan Khan). An unusual friendship soon develops between the two. We won’t spoil it by giving you the ending!
The idea of classic romance is beautifully twisted in the movie. The exchange of letters, feelings of love, and courtship are a few things to notice. The unusual bond of care is what gives the viewer a warm and loving feeling. Even though there are no songs, the acting compensates for everything! Moreover, the simplicity maintained by the director gives it a realistic feel.

6) Barfi!
Looking for a film to make you feel warm, cuddly, and emotional?! Barfi! Is a 2012 film directed by Anurag Basu. Barfi is a love story of two imperfect people who are perfect for each other. The film is rated 8.1 by IMDb- there’s nothing more to say!
The film redefines the definition of romance. Love transcends societal barriers and norms. Love is for All.- is what the movie has to say. Ranbir and Priyanka outdid themselves and so has the film! Moreover, the storyline is at not point predictable! The film ensures you are deep in it before speeding up to climax.
Set in the 1970s, the film depicts the story of Murphy “Barfi” Johnson (Ranbir Kapoor) who is a deaf-mute boy from Darjeeling, Shruti( Eleana D’Cruz) and the autistic Jhilmil (Priyanka Chopra). Saurabh Shukla, Ashish Vidyarthi, Jisshu Sengupta, and Roopa Ganguly in supporting roles have not let us down!
Now because Barfi is deaf, there are a lot of silent moments. These are filled by the heart-melting music by Pritam. Some songs are Ala Barfi!, phir le aya dil, and Kyon among others.

7) Lootera
This gem is a classic romantic movie inspired by the story The last leaf by O.Henry. The movie takes you on a wonderful journey of courtship and romance which then turns in a twist!
Sonakshi Sinha and Ranveer Singh starrer movie have Vikrant Messy and Adil Hussain as supporting actors. The raw and natural characters are justly shown by the actors. The simple nature of the film can be seen in minimal settings and dressing.
Among all things simple, music gives life to the scene. Songs like sawaar loon and manmarziyan take the scenes to a whole new level. If you want a romantic period film to add to your classic romantic movie collection, this is the one!

8) Ek Ladki ko Dekha to Aisa Laga
Lastly, this movie has given “classic romance” a new dimension! Movies are a depiction of society. And this one is rightly so! This 2019 film is the directorial debut of Shelly Chopra Dhar.
Sweety(Sonam Kapoor) hides a secret about her true love (Regina Cassandra). She decides to marry a writer (Rajkumar Rao) to please her father, Balbir Chaudhary(Anil Kapoor). However, chaos ensues when she decides to fight her family and society to win her love.
The movie portrays Sweety as a lesbian and urges society to accept the people as they are. Furthermore, we also see the love story of Juhi Chawla and Anil Kapoor, an old-age new romance trying to be accepted by society. The message to accept love in all forms is quite clear in the monologue in the last scene. This surely is a classic romantic movie not to be missed as this is the New Classic!
