Breast Cancer Myths Debunked!
Breast cancer is one of the most common and talked about cancers. And its cases have been increasing constantly. So it’s important for all, men and women, to possess correct knowledge which helps in its prevention and cure.
7 Common Breast Cancer Myths Debunked!
The internet is filled with information about breast cancer. But, it’s important to know the correct facts and not be swayed by the myths. We have debunked these myths for you.
1) Wearing a bra causes breast cancer
Many of you may have come across this common myth lingering in society. According to it, wearing bras, especially underwired bras can cause the disease.
The theory suggested that wearing an underwired bra may restrict the flow of lymph fluid out of the breast, causing toxic substances to build up in the tissue.
However, this theory doesn’t have any scientific evidence. A 2014 study of roughly 1,500 women with breast cancer found no link between bra-wearing and cancer. Also, if your bra is too tight or too small, the wires can dig into your breasts and cause discomfort, pain, or swelling. So choose your bra wisely!
2) Antiperspirant deodorants cause breast cancer
There have been persistent rumors regarding the link between antiperspirants and breast cancer. These rumors have been around for long enough to make it on this list!
The myth states that antiperspirant deodorants, especially those containing aluminum when absorbed in the skin, make their way to breast cells via lymph nodes and create toxic substances.
Another such theory was that antiperspirants by stopping underarm sweating, can prevent the release of toxic substances from the underarm lymph nodes, also increasing cancer risk.
Well, lucky for us (and those around us), this is not true!
As there has been no proven scientific link proving antiperspirants lead to cancer, we can assure you that this theory is a myth. So relax and use any and all types of deodorants to make yourself feel good!
3) It is hereditary
Several cancers are proven to be hereditary. Many people think breast cancer is also an inherited disease. But the fact is, only about 5–10% of breast cancers are believed to be hereditary.
The vast majority of people who get breast cancer have no family history. So the myth that you won’t get the disease as there’s no history of it in your family or vice versa is a myth.
Doctors often can’t explain why one person gets it and another doesn’t. However, it’s advised to be cautious if there is a history of it in your family.
4) Breast cancer always forms a lump
It’s widely known that finding a lump is a sign of breast cancer. However, did you know there are eight other signs of it too! And six of these eight signs are visual and can’t be felt.
Only a small percentage of lumps turn out to be cancer. But if you discover a persistent lump in your breast or notice any changes in breast tissue, it should never be ignored. It is very important that you see a physician for a clinical breast exam.
5) You won’t get it if you maintain a healthy lifestyle
You can do everything “right” and still get breast cancer. Exercising and eating healthy can reduce your risk, but it doesn’t eliminate it. It’s certainly worth managing the risk factors you can control, such as what you eat and drink and how physically active you are.
But it’s still important to get regular screenings, perform breast self-exams, and pay attention to any unusual changes in your breasts.
6) Young women don’t get breast cancer
Another dangerous myth is that only old women are at risk. However, scientific data says something else.
The fact is, all females are at risk! It’s true that being older increases your chances but, there are several cases where women in their 30s and even teenage girls getting the disease.
If you have a strong history of the disease in your family, be regular in getting your mammograms done, self-check, and consult your doctor if you find anything unusual.
7) Men don’t get breast cancer
This may come as news to you but men are at the danger too! Men may not think of themselves as having breasts. but the fact is that their pecs are essentially breast tissue. Thus, making them susceptible to breast cancer.
Due to lack of awareness regarding this topic, several men often discover cancer at a very late stage. The presence of breast tissues in men and women implies that both genders are at the risk of acquiring the disease.
Men can examine themselves in the shower and consult doctors if in need. Let’s break the stereotypes and spread awareness.
So here’s another myth debunked! If you have any more such myths, do share in the comments below. Also, don’t hesitate in speaking about it as many people are still unaware.
