According to the National Organization for Albinism and Hypopigmentation, “Albinism is an inherited genetic condition that reduces the amount of melanin pigment formed in the skin, hair and/or eyes. It occurs in all racial and ethnic groups throughout the world.”

In the US and Europe, albinism affects one in 18,000 to 20,000 people while in Sub Sahara Africa, 1 in 1400 people get affected. In India, around 100,000 to 200,000 people have this rare condition.

Albinos have paler eyebrows and eyelashes. Eye colour can be blue or brown and may change with age.

They have trouble with farsightedness or nearsightedness and are sensitive to light. A few have the inability of both eyes to stay directed at the same point or to move in unison.
