Enjoy!
25 Rom-Com Movies to warm your heart in lock-down:
-
10 things I hate about you
Let’s start with classics, shall we? Kat, an angsty teenager played by Julia Stiles, and her younger sister Bianca, a sweet, gullible high school girl have to obey a rule made by their dad – the younger sister cannot date until the older one does. This is problematic for our goofy nerd who wants to date Bianca. So, of course, he pays the school’s bad boy – Heath Ledger (*swoon*) – to woo Kat. This rom-com will make you fall for Heath Ledger and his charismatic performance.
-
Clueless
Another classic 90s style awesomeness coming your way! Loosely based on Jane Austen’s Emma, this movie follows Cher (Alicia Silverstone), a rich and beautiful teenager who decides to transform the new student Tai’s life by giving her a makeover and in the process gives herself a mental makeover too. One of the best things in this movie are Cher’s outfits – absolutely iconic!
-
Love, Simon
A fairly new addition to the rom-com movies list, but equally brilliant, ‘Love, Simon’ is about Simon who’s your average high-schooler with a cutesy, American family, a group of friends and one tiny secret – he’s gay. The movie explores him falling for someone he hasn’t ever met but is from his school. Of course, somewhere along the line chaos ensues and the movie progresses to become one of the most awesome movies you’ll ever watch. Keep tissues ready, because you’ll definitely cry. -
Say Anything
This movie gave the world one of the most iconic romantic scenes of all time. A sweet, average student Lloyd falls for the valedictorian Diane. As they start falling for each other, problems arise when Diane’s father objects to their relationship deeming Lloyd to be an unworthy match for his daughter. Many more things will happen in the movie but here’s what you takeaway: Date someone for whom you’d want to stand outside their window with a boombox in your hand (and they’d want to do the same for you). -
Always be my Maybe
Boy and Girl are best friends. Boy and girl sleep together. Boy and girl get awkward, have a fight and lose touch only to meet again after 15 years. Girl is now a celebrity chef and Boy still lives in their hometown with almost no ambition. Oh and, almost the entire main cast in Asian-American. ‘Always be my maybe’ follows the story of Sasha Tran (played by comedian Ali Wong) and Marcus Kim (played by Randall Park). Though the story in itself is fun enough to watch, the fact that the characters are Asian-American and how that affects their lives as well as how everyone has flaws is portrayed quite tastefully in the movie. Also, Keanu Reeves is in the movie. -
13 going on 30
The concept of this movie may be ridiculous, but it’s sooo much fun to watch. Jenna Rink is your usual 13-year old who wants to be popular but ends up getting humiliated by the cool kids and wishes to just become 30 years old already. And voila! Her wish is granted! The movie follows Jenna trying to figure out how to navigate through her new life. -
Notting Hill
If I had to give you one reason to watch this movie, it’s Hugh Grant. If I had to give two reasons, it’s Hugh Grant AND Julia Roberts. Anna, a famous Hollywood actress happens to stumble across a bookstore in Notting Hill owned by William. After a few funny mishaps, their romance begins. However, problems keep on interrupting their relationship due to their different lifestyles. This movie gave all the generations to come one of the most romantic and popular dialogues of all time. -
About Time
When our boy Tim, turn 21, his father tells him that all the men in his family can travel to the past. (The time-traveling aspect has some plot holes but we can ignore that) What ensues is your usual chaotic life, but with an undo button, lots of laughs, and some tears too. We follow Tim becoming an adult, falling in love (through some questionable-but-its-cute-coz-he’s-actually-a-nice-guy methods), and learning to live his extraordinary life as ordinarily as possible. -
27 Dresses
Jane is a sweet girl who has been a bridesmaid 27 TIMES! And hence owns 27 different, some-ugly-some-gorgeous dresses. On the night of two weddings (both at which she’s a bridesmaid), she meets Kevin, a news-writer with cynical views on marriage. However, everything goes downhill when Jane’s younger sister Tess falls in love with the guy that Jane’s secretly in love with too. This rom-com has it all. It’s funny, it’s romantic, it’s heartbreaking and it has 27 DRESSES. -
The Holiday
Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet, after a rough break-up, exchange houses. Because that’s how rich people deal with getting dumped, apparently. Both the girls then end up falling in love with two local men. Along with the romantic aspect, you also get to see both the women go through some emotional and mental changes. You get two awesome and completely different rom-com stories for the price of one! -
50 First Dates
A cliché with a twist. Adam Sandler plays a womanizing marine vet Henry, who one day ends up falling for Lucy (Drew Barrymore). La La Land
A film on everyone’s watch-list since its release and subsequent critical acclaim and a bazillion award nominations and wins. Silver Linings Playbook
One of the only few movies of Hollywood that have shown the main characters dealing with mental illnesses so openly. Pat, played by Bradley Cooper, who suffers from Bipolar Disorder and has just been released from a psychiatric hospital, meets Tiffany, played by Jennifer Lawrence, – a young widow who offers to help him reconcile with his wife if he agrees to participate in a dance competition with her. Funny? Check. Addresses important mental health issues? Check. Awesome acting? Check. -
How to lose a guy in 10 days
Cliche-est of the cliches, but we LOVE it. Benjamin, played by the awesome Mathew McConaughey, has made a bet with his coworkers that he can make any woman fall in love with him (a little misogynistic, but we shall look past it) and Andie, played by the amazing Kate Hudson, is writing an article on ‘How to lose a guy in 10 days’. They meet and chaos ensues. Though it relies on stereotypes for laughs, it’s definitely a great stress reliever. -
To All the Boys I’ve loved before
We’re back to Netflix! This rom-com basically answers the question “what would happen if my 9th-grader-self’s nightmares came true?” Lara Jean, your typical high-schooler writes a letter to her secret crushes when her feelings for them get super intense and stores those letters away. Except that now they have been mailed to all the boys she has loved before. It’s chaotic, it’s relatable and it’s so funny. Also, Noah Centineo. -
Bridget Jones’ Diary
The movie is basically a reinterpretation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, so you already know it’s going to be gooood. Bridget is a 32-year old single woman who wants to change her life. And she does that by falling for the irresistible charm of her boss, Daniel and hating Mark – a childhood acquaintance’s guts, followed by confusion, mixed feelings, and hilarious narrations. -
Me Before You
Absolutely beautiful, one-of-a-kind story. Louisa Clark, played by Danery-I mean, Emilia Clarke, is human sunshine who accepts a job to be a caretaker for the rich and paralyzed Will Traynor. Lou’s happy vibe clashes with Will’s cynical outlook on life and sparks fly. Though filled with funny moments, this movie will leave you soaked in tears and with a new outlook on life. -
Crazy, Stupid Love
Possibly the funniest movie on this list. Cal (played by Steve freaking Carell) has a serious mid-life crisis after his wife cheats on him and asks for a divorce. After seeing him mope around the bar, Jacob (played by Ryan freaking Gosling) decides to give him lessons on ‘How to pick up women at bars’. There are a few more love stories entangled in this mess making this truly a crazy, stupid love story and a must-watch for sure. -
Groundhog Day
Phil is a rude weatherman who wants to woo his producer Rita. An assignment sends them to cover ‘Groundhog Day’ which Phil absolutely despises. A movie with two amazing leads, a moving soundtrack, and a beautiful storyline, this rom-com is a win on every point.
