Some Badass Mothers We Have Had: Our mothers are our emotional barometer and our guidance. A mother is not a person to lean on, but a person to make leaning unnecessary. Mothers are impeccable, softened at the edges and tempered with a spine of steel. 

Moms and mother figures are the first empowering female figures we all have in our lives. Empowerment is one of the defining characteristics of motherhood. Below mentioned are some seriously awesome women who also happen to be Badass mothers:

SOJOURNER TRUTH

In 1826, sojourner truth and her baby daughter escaped slavery in ulster country new York. Soon after her escape, she heard that her 5-year-old-son, peter, was illegally sold to a man in Alabama. Truth raised money for a lawyer, filed a complaint in court, and successfully got peter out of slavery – one of the first times a black woman successfully sued a white man in court.

J.K. Rowling wrote the first four harry potter books as a single mother (while briefly receiving state benefits to get by), and she now serves as the president of gingerbread, an organization that provides resources for single parents and their kids. “I am prouder of my years as a single mother than any other part of my life,” Rowling said.

Princess Diana

Diana, princess of wales used her status as a royal figure to work with charities that supported children’s hospitals and to raise awareness and combat landmines .. on top of being impossibly gorgeous. But probably most inspiring was her unwavering commitment to shielding her young sons from the glare of public life..

Mary Wollstonecraft

One of the badass mothers who is widely regarded as one of the first feminists. Her works argued that women have the same intellectual potential as men and are held back only by lack of education. She wrote proudly at a time when women were not expected to speak their minds, let alone write essays and novels. Wollstonecraft moved to france to observe the French revolution, which she hoped would embody her ideals about equality. There, she fell in love with an American adventurer and got pregnant. When he moved on, abandoning her and the infant in revolutionary france, she returned to England where she raised the child alone, writing again to support her family. She died giving birth to her second child, mary , who would go on to be a writer, too – the author of ‘Frankenstein’ in fact.

Sai Mai

Hello to the original tiger mom, Sai Mai. The Bengal tigress at the Sriracha tiger zoo in Thailand, that was suckled by a sow until she was 4 months old. Two years later, she returned the favor by suckling six piglets. For years, the tigress cared for the ‘cubs’ of many species  without eating them.

Barbie Thomas

She lost both of her arms when she was just two years old and wasn’t expected to live. But boy, did she. And she hasn’t let two things like arms stop her from competing in fitness competitions, raising children, and showing her kids and us the power of determination and dedication every day. Bow down!

Mary Thomas

Mary Thomas, was a single mom of nine who chased away the members of the notorious vice lords gang with a shotgun when they came to recruit her seven sons. You probably know her youngest : basketball hall of famer Isiah Thomas

Marie Curie

Marie curie, best known for being the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, she also raised her two young daughters alone after her husband died in an accident in 1906. One of their daughters, Irene Joliot- Curie went on to co-win the Nobel Prize in chemistry with her husband for their own work with radioactivity. Now that’s just a badass family.

Rani Lakshmi Bai

Queen of Jhansi fought for independence from the British with her infant son tied to her back. When the british later rejected her adopted sons claim to the throne of Jhansi, rani fought even harder to resist the british rule.

Janese Swanson

Janese swanson is a software engineer, creator of where in the Carmen sandiego and founder of girl tech, a company that creates products aimed at making technology more interesting for girls. Oh and shes a single mom.

Elizabeth Blackwell

Elizabeth Blackwell was Americas first female doctor. She graduated first in her class in the 1840s and adopted aqn orphan and raised her. She later opened her own hospital run by an all-female staff. Badass.

Erma Bombeck

In the 1960s humour writer erma bombeck wrote about life as a suburban housewife in the midwestwestern US. She used her experiences with her adopted daughter and two biological sons to find humour in the everyday banality of housework. But it wasn’t all for jokes about laundry- she helped a generation of stay at home and newly working mothers find humour in their lives. She would have had a killer IG account.

Lou Xiaoying

Lou xiaoying was a poor, uneducated woman who supported herself by scavenging through the trash in jinhua, china. Starting in 1972, she adopted and rescued 30 babies she found in the trash. At the time , because of the one child policy and extreme poverty, some parents dumped their unwanted babies in the garbage. Xiaoying went on to raise all 30 of these children

Emmeline Pankhurst

The british mother was a passionate suffragette in the late 1800s and founded the womens political and social union in 1903. After protests, demonstrations, hunger strike and multiple jail stints, emmeline Pankhurst died in 1928 – just three weeks before women were finally given the right to vote in the U.K.
